Choose liposuction to eliminate excess fat and contour your body.

Eliminate excess fat and contour your body!

A liposuction procedure is ideal for patients who want to be rid of abnormal fat deposits in specific locations on their bodies. Removing fat cells in the target area helps patients achieve slimmer, more attractive body contours. Liposuction is an excellent choice for patients with stubborn pockets of fat that have proven difficult to remove with diet and exercise alone.

At Plastic Surgeons of Akron Liposuction is one of the most popular ways to reduce fat. Our patients enjoy a boost in confidence and body image after having this surgical fat reduction procedure done. Depending on the area that is treated, liposuction may also expand your wardrobe choices by removing stubborn areas of fat.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?

The ideal liposuction candidate is someone that has a small to moderate pocket of fat in specific areas of the body, despite reaching a stable body weight. Liposuction cosmetic surgery provides a more smooth and sculpted appearance, but should never be used for weight reduction. A proper diet and exercise routine is the preferred way for patients to reach a stable body weight prior to the treatment.

While it may be tempting to remove large areas of unwanted fat with liposuction, this is not a good idea for several reasons. Namely, liposuction only removes fat; It does not have a skin tightening effect. Thus, if a patient has a large amount of fat, using liposuction would be problematic because the skin would appear loose after the fat tissue beneath the skin has been removed.

Diet and exercise allows gradual fat removal, giving the skin an opportunity to retract on its own to a degree. Patients that have loose, hanging skin after major weight loss would be a better candidate for lipectomy or tummy tuck surgery with liposuction.

A good liposuction candidate has small to moderate areas of fat, without the presence of excess loose skin. Additionally, the ideal liposuction patient is in good overall health. The patient should be a non-smoker, or willing to quit using nicotine products for at least several weeks before and after the procedure. They must also not have active skin lesions or underlying health conditions such as cancer or tumors in the area that is to be treated. Women should not be pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of the procedure.

Other restrictions may apply. To find out if you're a candidate for liposuction Akron plastic surgeon Dr. Pedersen can provide a consultation to help you decide.

How Does Liposuction Work?

All liposuction works by using suction to physically remove fat cells from the target area. Liposuction involves suctioning away undesirable fat from certain areas of the body that the patient finds cosmetically displeasing.

During the procedure for liposuction a hollow tube (cannula) connected to a vacuum pump is introduced beneath the skin through small incisions. Traditional lipoplasty involves tiny incisions in the skin that allow the cannula to be inserted under the skin where the fat cells are located. A special fluid is injected into the target site that helps reduce swelling and bruising as the fat tissue is gently suctioned away.

The area is numbed prior to the procedure to reduce pain after the treatment is complete. For patients in Akron and Cleveland liposuction with Dr. Pedersen is made considerably more comfortable. After the procedure, the area will appear visibly slimmer and flatter.

Liposuction Side Effects

Marked swelling is common after the liposuction fat reduction procedure. Swelling is a frequent response to any sort of invasive medical procedure such as liposuction and it is nothing to worry about. This is completely normal and will resolve on its own over time. In some cases, compression garments may be used to improve skin retraction and reduce swelling.

Bruising is also a common side effect of invasive cosmetic procedures. While Dr. Pedersen takes great care to perform the procedure using gentle suction and small incisions, it is inevitable that some degree of trauma will occur at the target site. Since most patients have liposuction on areas of the body that are easy to hide with clothing, such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs, this is usually not a problem. Bruises typically subside in approximately two weeks, although each patient is different.

This list of side effects is not all-inclusive. Akron plastic surgeon Dr. Pedersen makes every effort to advise patients of possible liposuction risks and complications that may occur prior to performing the procedure.

A personalized consultation with Dr. Pedersen allows you to speak with one of Akron’s most experienced plastic surgeons in a private setting. He will be pleased to answer all the questions and concerns you might have so you can make a confident choice about whether to get liposuction.
